Overcoming Common Gelcoat Problems

In order to achieve a good gelcoat surface you must make sure the following practices are adhered to

  • Make sure the gelcoat is within shelf life

  • Stir the gelcoat before decanting

  • Always add 2% of the recommended catalyst and mix thoroughly

  • Ensure the mould is high quality and at a temperature between 18 and 25°C, if possible

  • Always ensure a good even thickness of 500 - 600 microns of gelcoat is applied in one layer

  • Avoid pouring the gelcoat onto the mould surface as this may leave witness lines (for some colors)

  • Always make sure the workshop temperature is above 15°C

  • Always make sure the gelcoat has reached workshop temperature before it is use

  • Clean brushes are essential

  • The workshop should be free from dust and other debris to avoid contamination
